Default Paragraph Style problems in Word97

When opening a new document (document1) I consistently get the style of "Hyperlink" in the toolbar. I have managed to change the style characteristics to those of Normal, but in fact I would prefer to have Normal as the Default Style when opening a new document

A related problem is that even though I select a different style from the drop down list and left-click, The Style name on the Toolbar does NOT change.

How would I be able to change the Normal.dot to give me Style "Normal" rather than "Hyperlink" when opening a new document? And why does the style not change in the toolbar when selecting a different style?

Your Normal template has been modified to include the Hyperlink
character style. Hyperlink, as well as any other character style,
overrides the setting of the assigned paragraph style. The easiest fix
is to quit Word, rename the Normal template, and then restart Word,
which will recreate the factory default Normal template.

Note that, alternatively, you could open the Normal file as a document
(via File > Open), click CTRL+A and press CTRL+SPACEBAR, which removes
any direct font formatting, such as character styles, and then save
and close the file.
