Default Login ID for Home Network

I originally posted this in the WINDOWSXP.GENERAL group but I realized this
may be a more appropriate forum....

I have two PC's networked. One running XP-HE and the other 2000
Professional. I have a printer scanner connected to the 2000 Professional
box.

I want my kids to be able to access the printer from their machine but they
have to go to Network Places, find the W2K PC, click OPEN/Explore, enter a
login ID and password and then print. I seem to remember when I set the
network up there was an option to "always login as xxxxx user".

Where do I go to specify the default userid the system should use when
attempting to connect? Is that even possible?

Chuck,

Why don't you just share the printer on the W2k machine?

Right click on the printer and select share. Give it a name and say OK.

Now on the kids computer go to the printers folder and click to add a printer. Choose to add a network printer and navigate to your W2k computer. When your asked for a printer name ignore this and continue will search for shared printers for you. You should see your shared printer on your network. Select it. you may need a driver disk and you may not. On 2 xp computers the drivers will be transfered over from one computer to the other but I'm not sure if W2k does this or not. Now if the XP computer has any other printers choose which one should be the default. If the W2k computer printer is not the default then all the kids have to do is select which printer they want to print to from the print window.

This is a limitation of XP Home. It will not automatically reopen share
connections without logging in and entering a password. See my "EasyMap"
batch file on "Tech Tips and Download page" for one solution at

Tbrox,

I do have the printer shared but you need to login from the XP box to access
it...

I think the other post is correct that it's a limitation of XP Home.
