windows login and network login

I have two machines running XP Professional which are connected to a
University network and are also part of a local Microsoft Peer-to-Peer
network. With the desktop machine, the original boot screen immediately
shows a popup box for the login password. When I connect to the shared drive
on the desktop machine, a popup window asks for a password. With the destop
machine, I have to click on the User name (there is only one user) for the
prompt box to appear. When I connect to the shared drive on the laptop
machine, the desktop machine connects directly without asking for a password.
I would like to configure the laptop machine to immediately show the login
password bos and to ask for a password when connecting to the network drive.
How do I do this?

My first guess is you have guest enabled on the laptop. Check that first.
