XP - home networking with W2K

OK before I pull all my hair out !

I have a small home network.
Dell desktop - Windows 2K - cable connect to Linksys
wireless router.

HP printer connected to desktop and shared.

Sony Vaio XP-home. Wireless network connection to internt
(fine) only network requirement to access shared Windows
2K machine printer.

The Windows 2K desktop can see and connect to the XP home
machine, but when the XP home machine tries to connect to
entire network/workgroup I can see the W2K machine but
when double clicking, get login screen. I login using the
XP home login name and password (which I have also setup
as a Username on the W2K machine) and then just get cannot
access network path.

No matter what I do it just won't connect with the W2K
machine. I don't know if it's something to do with the
wireless or W2K machine although I can't see anything
wrong there.

Any thoughts ?

Note W2K machine SR-4 all latest security releases.

Some of these questions might (or might not) help:

Does the logon screen that you ask for a User ID and password or for only a
password?

Is File and Printer sharing actually installed?

Have you checked the local security policy on the W2K machine?

What shows up in the event log on either machine (but especially the W2K
machine) when you try to connect?

What permissions are setup for the shares in Computer Management\Shared
Folders\Shares?

When going to connect both the userid and password options
are displayed.

yes and when from the xp-home machine I go to install new
printer, network printer, I see the w2K shared printer -
but when connecting to it it says network path not
available - same when trying through entire
network/workgroup name/W2K machine - shared printer/or
folders.
Have you checked the local security policy on the W2K
machine?

Yes everything has been triple checked. I can even add
the networked xp-home machine name to the security access
but its still does not work.
What shows up in the event log on either machine (but
especially the W2K >machine) when you try to connect?

That I will have to check
What permissions are setup for the shares in Computer
Management\Shared

Everyone, users, Administrators - I have tried everything
even adding the xp-home machine/user name.

I have read in a variety of other bulletin boards that
since one of the latest security patches it is almost
impossible to network XP-home ?

I have networked 100's of XP-Professional, Windows 2K
machines, etc. - which is why I am finding this
particularly frustrating.
