Dead Horse Topic

I'm certian this topic has been beat to death but right now I feel the same
way. I have a home network (workgroup) with 2 Windows 2000 Pro and one XP
Pro machines with static IPs connected thru a Linksys router.

All W2k machines can see folder and printer shares on other W2k machines.
The XP machine can see folder and printer shares on other W2k machines.
No W2k machine can see folder shares on the XP box.
First W2k box could see and connect to the printer share on the XP box.
Second W2k box could not see the printer share on the XP box until I
installed NetBEUI on the XP box. Its printer could then be seen but not
connected to.

I have spent th epast 6 hours screwing with this and th esad thing is the
second W2k box was connected to the XP printer until th ehard disk died last
week. (Don't you love Dells with WD drives?). I reloaded W2k from the Dell
reinstall disk and all is back to normal except I CANNOT connect to the
printer on the XP box.

And why can't aany of th eW2k machines see th eXP folder shares???

Please tell me the answer of hand me a deadly weapon and leave the room!!!

You have a variety of issues described there - name resolution, browser
(visibility), protocol, maybe firewall issues.

If you saw any improvement by installing NetBEUI on any computer, then you had
NetBEUI already installed elsewhere. NetBEUI passes through firewalls.
NetBEUI, installed on any less than all computers, will cause problems.

Start by looking at the protocol stacks on all 3 computers. Look at logs from
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each computer, so we can diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks for the reply. I will dig into it on Monday and post followup
information.

This is looking like something to do with a Windows update.

The 2k box had a crashed drive and so I had reloaded form the Dell 2k CD.
After doing online win update this all happened.

I now am having the same problem with an XP box. Reformatted the drive and
reloaded from the Dell XP cd. Could browse entire network (workgroup) and
see all printers. Ran win update and now I can't see anything but shares on
another XP box. Thanks Mr. Gates.

When you're done thanking Mr Gates (who somehow developed the leading operating
system that millions have decided to use on their computers, and nobody is
forcing you to do that), thank asswipes like Kevin Mitnick who are making money
after ****ing with peoples computers aggressively and illegally, and who cause
the need for all of these continual updates.

So roll back your updates, and see if the problem goes away. Then diagnose the
update causing the problem, and let's move on to the next step.
