<workgroup> is not accessible. The server is not configured for transactions.

I think I'm going nuts.

I've done this a dozen times befrore, and it's always worked. But now
it won't.

I have a very simple workgroup at home with one w2k machine and one xp
machine. They connect through a router which goes through to the
internet. Both are getting internet access without any problems.

I just redid the xp machine from scartch and joined it to the
workgroup. First time round I mispelled the name of the workgroup.
After noticing the problem, I joined again - this time correctly.

Problem: now, the XP machine can access the w2k machine and see and
modify all its files - but the w2k machine can't even open "Computers
near me" in "My network places." When I try I get the error message
above:

<workgroup> is not accessible. The server is not configured for
transactions.

For the record, the w2k machine cannot ping the xp machine either.

I've tried a zillion things - leaving and rejoining the workgroup,
disabling and reenabling "simple file sharing" on the xp box,"
disabling and enabling xp firewall (which I don't use), futzing with
every other possible share setting I can find - but I just can't get it
to work.

One other anomaly: when I right click on the files in explorer on the
XP box, I get the normal file sharing options - but when I right click
on the drives, I can't see them.

Any tips out there?

Mmmph.

That one didn't get the problem, but I got it solved.

Thinking back, what I actually did was to rename the workgroup *on the
w2k machine* to match the new name on the newly set up xp machine.
However, the old, w2k machine was still trying to access the old
workgroup machine for offline files under the old workgroup name, which
was causing some kind of log jam. I unchecked offline files, flushed
the cache, re-joined the workgroup, and everything was fine again. Now
I just have to get offline files up and working again - but that's
doable.
