Default group policy no longer on the PDC

J

Jack Ernst

When trying to edit the default group policy, I get the
message: Failed to open the Group Policy Object. You may
not have appropriate rights and in details: The system
cannot find the path specified.

Now When I check the GUID the corresponding folder and
subfolder were first still there, although empty. Now
they're gone altogether, but I have a copy of the folder
with the corresponding GUID on another domain controller.
The Support pages tell me to restore the files to the same
structure. Is it possible to retore a default policy from
scratch (we had not changed anything in the default policy)
or should I just copy the corresponding folder from another
domain controller ? What's good practice here ?

Thanks in advance...Jack

Hello Jack

If you not have made any changes to the Default Domain Policy, You can
restore it from another Domain Controller sure, as well if you have done
changes. If you want to re-create the default domain policy you can try to
get a tool from Microsoft Support.

This tool only works on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, I supposed you
ware at Windows2000. For

Group Policy questions about Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP please post
in microsoft.public.windows.group_policy

Well, in sheer desperation I created a folder in
sysvol\domain\policies\ with the correct GUID, which
somehow for the default policy is always the same and which
I found on another domain controller and bingo, the next
time I opened the GP no more complaints; the default policy
was there..... Thanks anyway
