Default File Name

I have a template that seems to function normally, until it is time to save.
Here's the scenario. I open a document via FIle|New and select a document
based on this template. When the file opens it shows Document xx in the
title bar as expected. When I go to save, I'm expecting that Word will
suggest a name based on the starting text. What it uses instead is "Network
Connectivity Policy.doc", clearly a document that was created sometime in the
past. I started the template from an existing document and began by clearing
out all text, and have checked for any hidden text.

That leads me to two questions, first how do I get Word to go back to its
expected behavior when I hit Save and second, where would a string like the
above be stored?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It's possible that the original (and now your template) has a macro named
FileSave that sets the name "behind your back". Press Alt+F8 and scan the
list for that name. If you find it, select it and click the Delete button.
Then hold the Shift key while you click the File menu, and select Save All
(which is available only with the Shift trick) -- that will save the
template as well as the document.

Jay,

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, the only macros I find are the ones
that I wrote, none named FileSave.

Open the template for editing (navigate to its location and open it as you
would a document). Select File | Properties and clear the offending text
from the Title field. If you want a descriptive title, put it in the Subject
field instead.

Thank you, I've been going nuts over this one.

It figures that the resolution was in front of me the entire time.

This got me on a lot of templates imported from (I think) Word 6.0 to 95,
when the behavior changed. Back when all files had to have 8.3 filenames,
each template had a description that was displayed in the File | New dialog.
When Windows 95 permitted long filenames, this description became the Title
field in the File Properties, and I had to move my descriptions out of the
Title and into the Subject.
