Default Double-click action

Hi

I recently got a new machine running XP Home Edition SP2.

When double-clicking on a .JPG file, instead of Previewing the file in
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, the file is opened in MSPaint. When I
right-click on the file, the default double-click action (in bold case) is
EDIT instead of PREVIEW.

WHat can I do? Or is this another SP2 bug?

First, try resetting your file association.

Right click one of your .jpg files and
from the menu...choose Properties /
General tab / Change button...

Highlight "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"
OK / Apply / OK.

Now if you still have an issue try the following:

Go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

I'm having the same problem except that when I double-click mine opens a
document filled with code in Word 2000. I can right-click and OPEN WITH
Windows Picture And Fax Viewer which is what I want. I've tried everything
that I've found in this newsgroup. Thanks.

I had already tried everything you say. I do need to add that this applies
only to images in a Word document (i.e, My Pictures). I copied one of them
to C:/(filename) and double-click works properly. Is this normal or do I
need to move My Pictures out of My Documents?

I found that by going directly into My Documents from the Start Menu instead
of through a word processor everything works fine. With a word processor I
was getting a document filled with code whenever I double-clicked an image
file. I hope somebody will benefit from this, otherwise I wasted your time.
Thanks for your time John.
