Default Beep sounds on top of other sound events

Got a weird problem - the Default Beep is playing whenever other sounds are
trying to play. E.g. when a reminder pops up in outlook, I hear the
reminder.wav and also on top of it Ding.wav. Also happens sometimes when
minimizing windows. When starting Windows, I hear about 8 of them.

If I turn off Default Beep, it doesn't happen. However I want Default Beep
on for things like volume control checking etc.

This never used to happen. Any ideas?
