I'll get shot down in flames but I really like Gravity..

XanaNews; Short of documentation, extensive in possibilities. When I
shut it down it sometimes ends ungracefully but no harm to integrity is
done.

There are a number of decent newsreaders and its a matter of trying out a
few to see what suits you. Some have leanings towards binaries, others
text. Coming from Outlook Express some of them might look so different as
to appear initially incomprehensible. Persevere.

I left FreeAgent some years back because it couldn't deal with yEnc
encoding. People were raving about Xnews but its behaviour was too weird
for me. So I tried a half dozen others, but nothing suited. I came back to
Xnews, spent some time with it and it clicked. Has now become a great
favourite.

The more I think about it, evaluating software is quite an art. Many
things are not immediately apparent, and being creatures of habit we are
ingrained into doing things the way we first learned to do them. Properly
trying out software takes some time and an open mind.

So I'd recommend Xnews, and Dialog, and Grabit (excellent for binaries and
its handling of NZB files). Binary News Reaper is great for binaries but I
just haven't spent the time getting under its skin.

This will depend on your skillset and needs. Many newbies prefer
Outhouse Express (I am sorry, Outlook Express) because of the ease of
use. Others are happy with the one built in with Thunderbird.

If you need tons of features and configuration ability, Xnews, Forte
Free, 40tude, et al are great chioces. You are going to have to try one
and see for yourself.

Me? I like Xnews :), but it does not run all that well (for me) in
Linux under WINE.

Seconded; it's the only one which I've tried which doesn't drive me up
the wall.
