Death of FP (vs Expressions)

A

Ako

Sorry about this post but I can not get my client to update past April 06
and have had a hard time reading through the posts spread out over Google's
version of these NGs.

Can you one point me to an earlier thread that answers the basic questions
raised by the death of FP? I tried out Expressions today and it doesn't give
me the help I need.

I do a small academic web on the side and FP saved me a lot of time with
shared folders, navigation view that let me easily move files around, the
'include' columns, the insert web components feature, etc.

Am I only left to stay with FP 2003 until no web host uses FP extensions? So
I know when the news first broke there would have been a healthy discussion
here about what is going on so since I am having a hard time getting around
in the NG I would appreciate someone telling me how to find such a
thread(s).

Thanks Kevin, but I am not using SharePoint, just a simple web with FP
extensions.

Am I right that Microsoft will not come out with any web product that
has the FP 2003 features that I use the most?

Thanks.

PS Sorry for the different signature but I had to switch to Google
since I can't get the server for my newsgroup to update.

What FP 2003 features do you use the most?

FYI: You don't have to upgrade, unless you see a benefit...

Correct, This will be the last version of FrontPage however you can
continue to use it as long as you want and as long as your ISP supports the
server extensions. You could start converting any FP components that
require the server extensions over to some other method and then you could
use FP forever and just FTP up your files to the server if your ISP stops
using the extensions.

Have you tried Expression yet? The beta is a free download and you may find
you like the features in it.

In response to the flurry of responses, in my initial post I mentioned
trying Expressions and said that it did not work for me like FP 2003. I
am at a point that I don't want to have to learn an entirely new
system.

In terms of the features that I use the most, I also said when starting
the thread:
"I do a small academic web on the side and FP saved me a lot of time
with
shared folders, navigation view that let me easily move files around,
the
'include' columns, the insert web components feature, etc. "
So those are the kind of FP 2003 features that I don't want to loose.

Yes, I read that some web hosts will keep extensions for a while and if
they don't have it that Ms will make it available for me to upload. But
the handwriting is on the wall and it looks like I will have to
stopping developing web pages. Unfortunately, my supervisor has me do
special webs for him like the one now for a global organization.

I appreciate this concern and support but I fear Ms has left me behind.
I have never wanted to learn more than I have to learn. When I start
back in 1996, I worked directly with simply html code but then FP came
along and solved a lot of my problems. Now I need to figure out how to
transfer my webs before FP extensions are completely gone from web
hosts that I would be willing to use.

(Again another signature change for which I apologize, but this is
still the person who started the thread.)

If the hosts choose not to keep the extensions, you won't be able to upload
them. It's their decision.

"{I have never wanted to learn more than I have to learn...}"

Now that is a really scary thing for someone that supposedly develops
"academic" websites to say.

Aa a matter of interest, does anyone know of a complete list of the features
that FPSE supports, and which would have to be replaced by other code if
one's server removes FPSE

The good news for you is, Microsoft has decided to retain support for many
FrontPage server extensions in Expression. It will appear only if the web
you are working on uses them; otherwise it will not appear. So, you should
check out the Expressions links that Tom posted to see specifically what is
and is not supported. Also, make sure that your host continues to support
FrontPage server extensions.

IF Expressions does not use FPE's
will it do forms with e mailing results?
I will be happy to see FPE's go the way of the dodo bird if we give
something easier or better to do forms........
What are my alternatives for making forms email results not using FP at this
time.
I have to re-do the pages anyway..
I could also use a nice music player for the site I am working on..........

EW will use the same form handlers that you had available to you in
FrontPage. You will be able to send to file, e-mail, or a database
provided the server has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed on
it.

The only form feature that has been pulled is validation.
