DCPROMO help needed

Hi Group,

Ive taken over support for a company who had a domain setup
incorrectly...anyhow heres the problem.

Ive changed the local domain name & setup from fresh a new DC.

Theres a webserver thats on the old domain still which i wanted to join the
new domain, the web server wassetup as a DC so i ran DCPROMO to demote it.

The DCPROMO finished & upon reboot a username & password prompt came up but
it doesnt accept the standard administrative username & password.

Ive tried every permitation of our historical passwords & have even tried
without.

Any ideas or do i need to flatten the box?

Thanks in advance.

When you demoted the server, you should have been asked to enter a new admin
password. If you were just clicking ok, without looking, you probably
assigned a blank one...try no password.

Other than that, you could try the recovery console with your legacy
passwords but they most likely won't work from what you were saying.

If that fails, I guess you've got two choices:

1. Boot into DOS mode (NTFS DOS or Modified Win98 Boot Disk) and delete the
SAM (that'll cause Windows to create a new SAM and thus reset the admin
account to blank)
2. Flatten the box.

When you demote a DC you are prompted for a
local administrator password; that's the password
you should be using.

You probably can't use the administrator password
from the old domain since I assume the credentials
cache is cleared by dcpromo.

If you have a backup you can restore system state
and try again.

If all else fails, and only if all else fails:
