w2k server initially setup in its own workgroup, then dcpromo run to
join an existing domain with several dc's in several different locations
connected via wan

do you need to add a w2k server to the domain prior to dcpromo? i missed
this step and whether it is this or something else causing me problems
all dc's are experiencing strange replication problems that seem to have
started around this time but possibly before this, not quite sure
currently if its connected.

Well, dcpromo is used to join a member server to an existing forest,
or to create a new forest on its own. If you don't join the domain at
the time of running dcpromo, you will end up with 2 forests. This
sure will create problem with you.
