17-Apr-07 / DCC Connection drop-out problem
To: WIN XP NETWORKING...
* 1 DeskTop pc connected via crossover to portable Compaq Pressario M2000
series.
(Both modern, Intel, XP Pro SP2, 256MB RAM; no virus; no obvious problems).
PROBLEM: Non-functioning "Repair" in "Support" of the "Local Area Connection
Status"
box, LAN icon (2 monitors) in notification area.
Truth is, I've never yet in my time seen "Repair" accomplish anything other
than
deliver the following, quite frankly, useless message:
Limited or no connectivity -
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action
cannot be completed: RENEWING YOUR IP ADDRESS.
For assistance contact the person who manages your network.(Great! That's
me!)
I mean, why belabor the obvious? It'd be more sensible to at least provide a
link
here to a knowledgebase article, for instance, which discusses the issue in
more
detail, providing all possible reasons for why "RENEWING YOUR IP ADDRESS"
can't
be accomplished.
In "Support" tab it's stated (( whether or not a connection was established)):
Limited or no connectivity
You might not be able to connect... . The problem occurred because the
network
did not assign a network address to the computer.
*Some hint of "Why not" woull help here.
However, in the "DETAILS" tab, there are 3 positive entries for:
Physical Address - XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
IP Address - 1XX.2XX.0.XXX
Subnet Mask - 255.255.0.0
The numbers for the above 3 are standard and same if connection exists or
not -
I'm fairly certain. (I won't publicise the 1st 2 here for security reasons -
in case it's a risk).
Because nowhere is it explicitly stated exactly WHAT "DETAILS" refers to
(EXCEPT the "?" pop-up says "Click to display detailed info relating to the
properties of the network connection."), I have consequently no idea whether
the DETAILS tab content refers to the Portable (logically - because I'm
looking
at it now) or to the DeskTop computer. There's not enough info given to be
certain. One can assume anything here, really, if not familiar w/ the issues.
IMHO, a wrong "assumption" here could lead to more problems & waste of time.
-------------------------------------------
Usually, when I first connect the 2 computers (any 2) together w/ a crossover
cable (after previously having used the Wizard at both comps to set up a
home net connection - another ambiguous hassle because there's really no
such direct option available for such a connection in XP Pro), I do
ultimately
make a good (but "limited") connection. I think the "limited" might refer to
the absence of an "Internet connection" - but I'm not sure. This isn't clear.
In this particular case here, I seem to occasionally lose the connection and
I think it may be because of the DeskTop properties setup for the
Screensaver.
After I get the screen to return and check my connection via click on my
DeskTop "Mshome" shortcut, I see only the local computer, at either 'puter.
(I do realize that a successful connection can sometimes take many minutes).
-------------------------------------------
Can anyone shed any light on the purpose and usefulness of the (1) "repair"
tab and on (2) why the connection keeps "dropping out" ?
Greatly appreciate any comments/help.
