Database Tool - sharing step failing

Although I've been successful setting up a shared BCM database before and am
familiar with the steps to get it working, I am having difficulty with a
current effort. What has happened is that when I run the BCM for Outlook
2007 Database Tool (hereafter referred to as BCM-O7DT) and attempt the share
database phase it fails to succeed. An error window appears with a red
circle and white X stating "Sharing the database did not complete
successfully."

I've double-checked my work and the instructions and have yet to find an
answer or any information about the existence of log files I can search for
clues. My Googling and web searching has yet to lead me to any useful
information. Do you have any ideas or can you help in any way?

TIA - Dale

Are you logged on as the Administrator? That's been my salvation with this
Tool.

Thanks for the response.

No - I ran it under my account which has domain administrator membership.

I reran the tool as the Administrator, created a new test database and then
tried the share step. The result was the same failure occured.

I've had this problem before and I think I solved it by (1) being the
administrator on the server, and (2) having some data in the BCM database.
Restore a little test database into it first. I think that's what I did to
solve it.

Lon

That's very strange but I'll give that a try later when I'm able and post
back the result.

Thanks again Lon

After successfully restoring a .sbb database file into the newly created
database I again ran the tool. This attempt to share the database ended with
the same failed results.

Another help resource I'm using pointed out that there is a BCM logging tool
that can be turned on by changing the value of a registry key, BCMLogging, to
255. This registry key location is HCU\Software\Microsoft\Business Solutions
eCRM Wizard.

Once logging was on I recorded the following after another failed "sharing"
attempt (if you need the non-wordwrap jumbled version let me know):

There appear to be two problems.

1) Sharing is not working.
2) A database is not getting migrated to version 3 (2007).

i.e.:
[09:11:03.4004383]BusinessLayer.Wizard: ReattachOldDatabases: Enter
[E] [09:11:36.1074936]ServerWizard: Specified cast is not valid.

I would try to get the database migrated to v3 first, and then look
into the sharing issues.

Since BCM itself has been around longer than the db tool, I would
first try restoring this database backup on a regular version of BCM
2007. Then once the database had be migrated to v3 and everything is
working, then backing up the new database v3 and moving that to the
server with the db tool.

I think you have some curropted database which can not reattach to the
instance, since in the failure callstack, it is failing during
reattachingoldatabases.

I suggest you;

1. Stop sqlserver, you can type "services.msc" to "Start > Run" and find
the sql server instance they you are using and stop it.
2. Find the path that you store your mdf files most probably
"%temp%\..\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager"
3. Delete the mdf files that you are not using.
4. Do the same in first step and start SQL service.
5. Try sharing again.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

I missed this detail the first time I read this thread.

Fatih,

This error in the log:

[E] [09:11:36.1074936]ServerWizard: Specified cast is not valid.
[E] [09:11:36.1074936]ServerWizard: at
Microsoft.BusinessSolutions.eCRM.BusinessLayer.BCMSecurity.get_SimpleFileSh
aringEnabled()
at

looks like a C# bug.

I expect that all this code would be doing is checking a Windows
Registry value for whether SFS is turned on or off, so it's somewhat
strange that this would fail for one user while working for everyone
else. Perhaps this Registry is corrupt. I suspect this exception can
be caught in the code.

Dale,

If you're still around, check the value of HKLM\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\ForceGuest in the Registry. Is it a 1
or 0?
