I want to design a website where customers can retrieve their records
(password protected?) from a database. Right now I can't even use the
Database features, as they are disabled. I have two questions I need to
clarify before I invest a huge amount of time and money, and unfortunately,
for me, I don't have the expertise to answer them. I really hope someone can
help. I am using Frontpage 2003 to develop the website.

1) If I understand it correctly, the database features in FP2003 won't work
on my current computer running windows xp, I have to work on a computer
running Windows Server 2003 with .asp and .IIS extension capability (i'm
probably not wording this right)?

2)Even with the right operating system and software, will I be able to
create a website using FP 2003 where individuals will be able to retrieve
only their records, not anyone elses?

You would need to have Windows XP Professional with IIS and the extensions install to design and
test locally. The live/remote server must be a Windows 2000 / 2003 Server with IIS and the
extensions and ASP installed.

Yes, but you will need tobe willing to learn ASP/VBScript, etc. or you need to hire a developer to
create it for you.

Thank you for the guidance. I really appreciate the response. I do have
WindowsXp professional on this computer. Do I download/buy IIS and the
extensions? Which extensions beyond .asp? Once I do this will the database
interface wizard/database features work? I am hire someone, I'm not sure,
but it's good advice. I can't even get to that point without the wizard
working. Thank you again.

You would install IIS and the FP extensions via Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows

I installed IIS with whatever options where selected by default but when I
try to follow this step "On the New task pane, under New Web site, click More
Web site templates. Double-click Database Interface Wizard" there is no
Database Interface Wizard to pick from or if I try to insert=>database, the
database button is not highlighted and I can't click on it. Any ideas? I
really appreciate your help so far.

Do you have a site open in Frontpage? (File > Open > Site)

With Frontpage you must always open the site first, then create a new
page/open an existing page.

Otherwise some options will be greyed out.

Thank you for all your time & help. I found that I needed to check
"Author-time Web Components" under Tools>page options>authoring. Once I did
that, the database wizard showed up and I was able to select insert>database,
etc. as an option.
