Database connection error (re-post)

Trying, trying again...

Hi. I'm running Office 2003 on Windows XP Pro. I have designed a database
in Access 2003 and want to design a website using FP2003 where users
can retrieve selected information through the page from that database.
I have tried several times to set up a database connection on FP but
have had no luck. When trying insert/database/data view or data/insert
data view, I get this message: "The FP Data View features can only be
used on servers running Windows SharePoint Services. If you do not
have a Web site hosting service, find one that supports FP or WSS by
using the Web Presence Provider." However, I do have a web site
hosting service that supports FP.

Next, when I try insert/database/results and go through the ensuing
wizard, I always get the following error message, even when using the
built-in sample "Northwind" database:

Database connection error

Server error: Unable to retrieve the list of record sources from a
database using the connection string:

DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=URL=fpdb/fpnwind.mdb.

The following error message comes from the database driver software;
it may appear in a different language depending on how the driver is
configured.
-------------------------------------------------------

Source: ADO
Number: -2146824584 (0x800a0e78)

I have tried detect & repair but there's no change. As I say, my web
host supports FP extensions so that can't be at fault. I had this
problem with FP2002 as well, and switched to Office 2003 partly to try
and resolve this. Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Frustrated of London

Hi Kathleen,

Thank you very much for your response. I contacted my web hosting
company and they responded as follows:

"Currently, all of our Web servers are running RedHat. We support only
apache ASP. This is not full windows ASP. We support MySQL database
which is very easy and for more information about that you can visit
the following URL :
http://www.mysql.com"

Does this mean I can't use this hosting company at all for the
purposes I outlined, or is there a way round this? If I need a new
firm altogether, can you recommend one or let me know the best way to
find one?

Many thanks again,
Richard

To use Data Views, your site must be running Windows SharePoint Services on
Windows Server 2003. To use the Database Results Wizard, your site must be
on a Windows Server that supports ASP and Access and preferably the
FrontPage 2000 or 2002 server extensions. It is possible to use the wizard
without the server extensions, but you don't really want to go there. If you
are going to develop live on the hosting server, you will need the server
extensions to do that. See this page for more specifics: FrontPage Server

Hi Kathleen,

Many thanks for your reply and suggestions. My web server does have
the FP extensions loaded. The issue, it seems, is with the database
server they use. I contacted my web host again to convey your last
piece of advice and asked them if this meant that I could not
therefore design and host an Access/FP website with them. They
replied, "You can have your website designed with frontpage [if you
use] MySQL as database running on our server which is very easy to
access and is used by almost all hosting providers avaliable today,
instead of using Frontpage 2003 with Access 2003 database." This seems
to mean therefore that my choice is either to change my web host to
one that supports Windows Sharepoint Services, or keep the host and
buy MySQL for about £145. I suppose from a Microsoft point of view you
would advise me to change the web host, especially as I am familiar
with Access and not with MySQL. This would be an inconvenience but it
would save me £145. If however I did keep the host and start using
MySQL, is there anything special I will need to do to configure
Frontpage to take the data from the MySQL database?

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I have little experience of this matter.
Thanks for any further advice you can give.

Regards
Richard

MySQL is a database server, it is not a desktop database like Access, you have to work with directly
over the internet, this applies to MS SQL server as well.

There are no options in FP to configure for any database.
