.dat files

Some of my email attachements are being sent as .dat files and can't be
opened by my friends. Many folks get them.....my ohter computers get them.
Where is the setting that determines how these files are to be handled?

Your friends' PCs must have an application that can
recognise which program created these .dat files, and
have the ability to process such files. What application
was it?
 
On your system, what application is associated with .dat?
Are you sending .dat files as an attachment?
