Dail-up and Hardware devices dissappear

(Windows 2000 Pro & SP4)
The dail-up connections although working properly at some
point stop being visible in the Dail-up folder, the same
happens with device manager's contents. I am therefore
unable to make any changes to curently installed devices.

Several re-installs have not solved the problem, because
at some point they dissappear again.

I would appreciate some help

Laptop or Desktop? Could be loose modem card, try reseating it. Got latest
driver? Tried different modem?

I have found the solution to my problem.
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ENUM ; security/permissions must have the system with full rights. In my case I had to inherit permissions from parent object before it would work proberly, apperantly some installations programs mess-up the registry.
