Sound Card dissappeared, not detected in device manager?

I had no sound coming from speakers a few days back (just all the sudden
stopped working) so checked in Device Manager and it showed my SoundBlaster
Live! 5.1 as working correctly at that time, no check marks or exclamation
points showing any conflicts under sound devices. Was checking the volume,
making sure nothing was checked to mute, that it was enabled, that it was the
audio deviced enabled, that volume was turned on, that sort of thing, speakers
showed green light so power was getting to it. Everything showed as if it
should be working, but still no sound. Also checked it using headphones, but
no sound.

Next time I turn on the computer,I decide to try putting in the SoundBlaster
Live Cd that came with the computer, follow the wizard, and now have Creative
Diagnostic Tool installed, so I run the diagnostic test that comes with it,
and the first test "detect hardware" comes back as failed-showing no hardware
- no sound card installed. Hmm?..go back to device manager and sure enough,
there's no SoundBlaster Live! listed under Sound & Audio. It's dissappeared,
along with the volume icon in systray.

I should add that when trying out the headphones to make sure it wasn't the
speakers that were the problem I went in the back of the tower and pulled out
the plug that connects the speakers and then plugged in the headphones, this
while computer was turned on. Maybe I blew something by doing this while
everything was turned on?

Even though the sound wasn't working before, at least it was still listed
under the device manager. Now it's not even listed, and with no sound.

Hi, I am having the same problem... not finding any help so far. Have you
figured anything out?

I posted here and on another fourm and didn't find any help either. Went
through all the troubleshooting steps listed on various help sites and after
not finding a solution, gave up and decided to just replace the sound card.
Still haven't found the time to install it yet with 3 kids at my heels all
day, but will post if I finally get sound again
