DAH Offline Again!!

Howdy,

I'm on Vista Ultimate (Thinkpad Z61p with Lenovo updates), and I LOVE IT!.
However once in a while my internet connectivity stops. I can't browse or
chat via Live Messenger. I can ping internal servers by name however can't
browse to them by name or IP. If I run Windows Network Diagnostics I get the
following response

A required network component is not working properly on this computer.
An installed Layered Service Provider (LSP) is malfunctioning.

It gives me the option to remove it or verify my proxy settings.... weird
options. My PC is behind an ISA 2004 firewall and has the updated client
installed and running. Other computers (WinXP Pro SP2) can get online fine
but I cannot. After a reboot it'll work fine. It's very random too. It
happens while i'm browsing. So I'll be clicking from one site to another and
then blamo, no more internet access.

Should I remove it? I dont want to hose the entire thing!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am now home, and its happening here. No ISA firewall here. ISA Firewall
client is turned off.

In the mean time while I was at the office, I uninstalled Lenovos Acces
Connections software, it manages networking profiles, pretty sweet too.
Anyway, after uninstalling, I lost internet access three times within an
hour and four reboots. So I installed it back on and now it happens maybe
twice a day. So it could be their software, but I don't know. I'm hoping
that someone else will post they are experiencing similar issues!

I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. This has been a hard-to-repro bug
that we've heard about and would love to hunt down and fix. With your help,
maybe we can.

Can you please run a "netsh.exe winsock show catalog" from an elevated
command prompt and post the output? That will help us determine what LSPs
are installed.

Also, was this a clean install of Vista, or an upgrade? Finally, what ISP
do you use and did you install any software along with your cable modem?

Hi Kim,

I think i found what is causing it. It appears Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS) Service is the culprit. When I stop that service, I immediately have
internet connectivity again! If I start it, i lose it, stop it, and
connections are back. I'm now researching a little to see if there's any
known issues, thus far not much. The results of the netsch is below. Hope
that helps.
