Howdy,

I'm running Vista Ultimate on my Thinkpad Z61p. Every once in a while when I
login my profile is not what it should be.... my desktop is empty,
documents, favorites, etc. everything is empty. when i look at the
properties of these folders they are pointing to the
C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile folder. If I reboot, my profile is
back and in c:\users again. Any idea why this happens? How can I avoid this
in the future?

Thanks,

David Lozzi

There might be some corruption in the user profile. When Vista logs in it
detects the corruption and logs you in with the default profile. Why this
happens sometimes and not others I don't know.

To test this create another user account. Work in that account to see if
the problem occurs. If not try copying the data/settings from the problem
account to the new one. Work in the new one again. If all is well delete
the problem account. If the new account works but gives the same problem
after copying the data/settings from the old account, you might have to bite
the bullet, and recreate the settings in the new account, and manually copy
data from the old to the new, testing as you go.

Here is a link for how to copy a user account. It's for XP but the steps
should be similar. Scroll down to Copy a User Profile.

Where it says "Open System in Control Panel" in Vista click Start | Control
Panel | System and Maintenance | System | Advanced System Settings in the
left pane | User Profiles - Settings.
