Customizing "File-Open" dialogs?

I find it annoying that the various file function dialogs in Windows always
default back to the same uninformative list. Much of the time, I'd prefer to
see the "Details" version. Is there any way to force this behavior 100% of
the time, perhaps via a registry tweak?

I use OpenWide 1.2b, a free for non-commercial use program by Luke
Hudson
from http://lingo.atspace.com/openwide.html

I found it discusses in thread "Question about 'Customize Common
Dialogs' "
here
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1113098172
where the author gives some details on how it works.

On XP Pro SP1 (+critical updates) I've used it for the last 2 weeks or
so, and find it useful in that I always want to see the Details view,
and I always want a larger dialog.
It affects all programs that use the common open dialog, unless
you specifically exclude them in OpenWide. It runs in the system tray,
and if you quit it the open behaviour returns to normal again.
