“open “, “Saveâ€, or “Save As†dialog box defaults

I use WIN XP Pro and have a question about an annoyance in the “open “,
“Saveâ€, or “Save As†dialog box that appears with just all programs and
Internet explorer.

It seems the “open “, “Saveâ€, or “Save As†dialog box defaults to the
“List†view to show files. I all ways have to change to the “Details†view
each time I use the “open†selection. A real time waster when you open many
files.

Is there any way to set the default value to open to the “Details†view? I
have searched and been unable to find any settings. I may not be asking the
right question, Tweak UI or Power Toys did not seem to mention. I am sure
there is probably a registry settings.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ron,

Which Help_and_Support are you referring to? The built in XP Help and
Support? A newsgroup? A Microsoft KB article?

I realize that the MVPs often see the same question for which THEY might
know the answer and/or exactly where the question might have already been
addressed.

I also realize that answering the same questions over and over again can be
frustrating. (I worked for Microsoft PSS in the mid-90s.)

Still, nobody is forcing anyone here to be an MVP. If an MVP feels that he
or she is 'burning out,' maybe it's time for them to take a break.

The same question had already been answered in the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support newsgroup. The reason I pointed
that out was merely to keep other people from wasting their time trying to
answer a question that was already answered and acknowledged by the original
poster in another newsgroup. I did not feel the need to chastise the
original poster for posting the same question in two newsgroups--maybe I
should have so it would have been clear to you.

I think you are making invalid assumptions with no facts to back them up.
All statements like yours do is irritate people. If I do get burn out, you
won't see me here.

Well, actually, I've had a similar question although I've never bothered to
post it anywhere -- and I'm curious what the answer is.

Is there a link to where the answer has been posted?

I'm not finding a microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support newsgroup
using an NNTP reader.

Alan,

It looks like you are using OE6 to post, are you? If so, are you
subscribed to the newsgroups through your ISP's server or
msnews.microsoft.com? If OE6 and msnews, click on tools, newsgroups and on
the resulting screen, type: help_ If you are connecting through your
ISP's server, it may not have microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support .

The only way I know to find a link to a particular thread is to wait until
it hits the Google archives and then do a search on it. Maybe an OE expert
can answer you better.

I could SWEAR that I typed in microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
correctly when I looked this morning (I embarrassingly say), but it didn't
display then.

Now I see it both on Microsoft's and my own ISP's server.

And the procedure given in the answer even works. :->

the solution -- using OE so I'm all set now.

I would like to suggest that you educate yourself a bit on what the MVP
Award actually is. It's a simple acknowledgement of past contributions and
carries no responsibilities on the part of the awardee to act or behave in
any manner other than as relates to the NDA. NOBODY has any business trying
to tell an MVP how to do what they do. By definition, they know how to do it
quite well.

In MS NGs, the phrase, "Already answered in..." has ALWAYS indicated another
Microsoft NG unless otherwise noted. Anyone but a newbie would know that Ron
was referring to a Microsoft NG. Anyone but a newbie would know how to
locate that group. That suggests to me that you're a total newbie... except
most newbies know they don't know how things work and simply ask questions
to find out, whereas you felt the need to *chastise* someone who's been
working these groups longer than all but a handful of people (and most of
the rest of that handful are "retired".) Newbies of that sort usually fall
under the category of "Ignorant A** hole". Is that what you are?

Or do you think perhaps an apology is due?
