"Open", "Save" or "Save As" dialog box default settings

I use WIN XP Pro and have a question about an annoyance in the “open “,
“Saveâ€, or “Save As†dialog box that appears with just all programs and
Internet explorer.

It seems the “open “, “Saveâ€, or “Save As†dialog box defaults to the “Listâ€
view to show files. I all ways have to change to the “Details†view each
time I use the “open†selection. A real time waster when you open many files.

Is there any way to set the default value to open to the “Details†view? I
have searched and been unable to find any settings. I may not be asking the
right question, Tweak UI or Power Toys did not seem to mention. I am sure
there is probably a registry settings.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Open a common dialog box, change the view to the one you want, and then
hit Ctrl/Cancel. Yes, it's counterintuitive, but this solution is in Ed
Bott's book "Windows XP Inside and Out" and it works.

Thanks for the tip. I did a quick trial with the Ctrl/Cancel. Seems to
work. Will do some more trials.

Where does it say that? If it does, it contradicts what it says
in another place.

Choosing View Options,
Changing Views in Common Dialog Boxes:
(page 424, in the (2003) Deluxe Ed.)

I for sure have never been able to make the change persistent.

.... just DL'd 'FileOpenPatcher'. :)

No offence, but File-Ex sucks. It is way too complicated and costs money. FileOpen Patcher
is exactly what krazycat is looking for.


FileOpenPatcher from ElmüSoft enlarges the Windows Open File dialog. (in Comdlg32.dll)

Thanks for your reply. As I said, I have been using File-Ex for years
and am quite happy with it.

Until you pointed out FileOpenPatcher I wasn't aware of any other
solution for the annoying view issue.

I have to admit that File-Ex is indeed rather complicated and I probably
only use a fraction of its functionality.

FileOpenPatcher may well be sufficient for what I want and I'll
certainly try it.
