My wife and I like using the Classic Start Menu. With Windows XP you could
customize the Start Menu by selecting the option that would only show the
most recently used programs in the Start Menu/Programs. I can not find this
on VISTA. Is it not available, or am I just missing it? I have found that
VISTA has moved a lot of different options to other areas, it is still there
and available, you just have to find it. Anyone know if this is still
available on VISTA?

Hi Dale and Tammy,

Right-click the Start Button (ie, the big round orb, at the bottom of the
Start Menu) and choose Properties from the context menu.

The "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue should appear. You can also
get there, by going to Control Panel and clicking on the "Taskbar and Start
menu" icon.

Now, click on the "Start Menu" tab.

You'll see 2 radio buttons, "Start menu" and "Classic Start menu".

Choose the second option. Then click Apply.

Press the Customise button to adjust the settings for your Classic Start
menu. To get the personalised setting, showing only recently used programs,
scroll down the list of options to the last one "Use personalised menus"
Check the check box, and click OK.

Is that the feature you're looking for?

We had that setting checked and it still gives us the entire program list
every time we go into the Start Menu then program. I don't know why it will
not show only the recently viewed items, but it won't.
Thanks for the help
Dale

Not sure ... I suspect that's as close as you'll get.

FWIW, I personally don't like several of the new interface features in
Vista, so I run with the "Windows Classic" theme enabled. But the newer,
Vista-style Start menu *is* actually one feature in Vista which I've grown
to quite like. Its "Recently Opened Programs" list is pretty handy (IMHO).

So maybe one solution, is to perservere with the new Vista Start menu; and
it will grow on you after a while.

Good luck with it,

We did start using the new Vista Start menu and you are right, it is very
nice. It has a lot of the old features that I liked in the old classic start
menu. Using the Vista start menu will probably be our best bet.
