Custom virtual memory settings ignored after re-boot

I just built a new machine with 1GB RAM. Win XP defaults to an enormous 1.5
GB page file. My actual virtual memory usage has been averaging less than 10
Mb. I've gone through the routine to set custom parameters for the virtual
memory but Win XP ignores my settings and restores this huge page file when
I re-boot. I first changed the settings to use no page file, re-booted,
deleted pagefile.sys, re-booted again, changed settings to Min=20 / Max=100
and press "Set."
XP creates a 20 MB pagefile.sys which remains in effect till I re-boot. Then
it's back to the 1.5 GB pagefile even though my custom settings are still in
place. What the heck am I missing here?

Are you an administrator of your PC?

After you enter the desired pagefile size, you DO NOT click
OK. You must click the "set" button and then click OK.

Make the initial a bit bigger - While 50 would probably be enough to get
away with, I'd make it 100. And have the Max much higher. that will
probably never get used, but you need to have somewhere to assign all
the pages that get allocated to programs but never get brought into use.
Otherwise they assign to RAM and lock it out - and they may amount to
hundreds of MB. Be sure to click Set after changing values. Read more
