Custom Layout and Content Layout Selection 1:1 ?? H-E-L-P

My first customized PowerPoint 2003 template. Clearly there are a few things
I don't understand.

The Master is OK.

For the other slides, if I want background variability, must it be linked
directly to a user-level text/content layout on a 1:1 basis ?? Here is what
I mean --

I need 2 possible kinds of user selectable backgrounds:

-- A standard uniform background, or

-- Backgrounds that include uniform background PLUS some margin art of full
height photos about 2" from right border.

If the user wants to use border art, each would be different in the slide
deck. These are photos on the border, and each slide deck would use 3-4
different uniform backgrounds with different photos on each.

-- Choice of either of above should not limit user's selection of "Text or
Content Layout," so it would be nice if I did not have to make a 1:1
connection to a secondary slide background and any particular Text or Content
Layout.

Using Microsoft's online training, I understand about a Slide Master. The
online training then talks about using a "title master." However, this seems
to be linked 1:1 to Text and Content Layouts. If the 1:1 relationship is
true, how would I offer a more flexible use border art or use uniform
background only of any layout??

Many thanks!

A title master is always connected to a slide master, so you have a pair.

But you can have a slide master without a title master. Which means you have
one slide master, not a pair.

You can have multiple individual slide masters or multiple slidemaster +
titlemaster pairs or combinations thereof. Just go to View|Master|Slide
Master and use Insert|New Slide Master.

When you insert a new master, it becomes available at the top of the Slide
Design task pane where it says "used in this presentation."

So just add a new slide master, add your border art or whatever, and it will
be available for your users to apply to slides.

When you add the masters, right-click and choose "rename master." This will
help you see that they've been added to the "used in this presentation"
section in the slide design task pane. It will also help you and your users
to keep them straight, especially if they look similar.
-- Choice of either of above should not limit user's selection of "Text or
Content Layout," so it would be nice if I did not have to make a 1:1
connection to a secondary slide background and any particular Text or
Content
Layout.

I have no idea what this means.

If the slide layout (Format|Slide Layout, which opens the Slide Layout task
pane) is set to "Title Slide," then it will rely on a title master.

If the slide layout is set to any other layout, it will rely on a slide
master.

Does that help? If you still have questions, holler back.
