After changing the icons go to the theme tab in display
window and if it has (Modified) in the theme box
use "save as" button to save theme to file. Save this
file.

When you finish making changes, click Apply on the Themes
tab in the Display Properties dialog box, and then click
Save As.

Type a name for the theme and click OK.

If you modify a theme without saving it, your changes are
saved with the name Previous theme name (Modified).

However, your modified theme will be lost if you select a
different theme.

New themes are saved in My Documents.

Why are they changing. It's a live setting - you make it and it's saved. Therefore either you are not shutting down correctly (in which case nothing is saved), not loading your profile on logon (aging nothing will be saved and you'll get a dialog telling you), or something is changing it back.

You can always remove write permissions on this key. Then nothing can change it.

LoL yup thats why I'm pulling out all my hair on this one David
the only thing as I also mentioned in a new post here its a group policy bug
or something because the built in admin account has none of these problem
only all other users (only lmao)

I just posted it btw so it might not show up yet

its been something that started in the past 1-2 months (a windows update bug
maybe in one of the latest updates?)

1. Confirm it is changing the registry under this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID
[This is where user made config is stored - this is new in XP. The previous locations are also still valid - this is because XP can hide desktop icons unlike earlier versions where they are removed]

2. Confirm that this has changed back after login

3. Remove write permissions and hope the program changing it pops up a dialog when it can't change it.

4. Monitor boot and login with regmon from www.sysinternals.com using the key as a filter (else you'll have tens of thousands of lines to read through)

5. If you change it elsewhere it should stick I'd imagine.

NVidia seems to be value minusing with their drivers, adding useless features which are none of a drivers business. My theory on some issues like this (eg sound set to zero volume on every boot) is it's the drivers or the software that comes with the drivers. So you could try using the inbuilt XP drivers to see if it your video drivers.
