Cursoris a flashing square & won't let me type anything...

On my son's computer, the cursor is a square instead of a vertical line.
When you try to highlight something, such as a URL, it will turn gray and not
let you type anything. It does this in all areas of the computer, not just
internet explorer. The only place where we can type is on the opening
windows page where you need to type your password to access your desktop. I
hope I've explained this right!

Go to Control Panel > Accessibility Options > Display (tab).
Under "Cursor Options", move the "Width" slider all the way
to the left (narrow) and click APPLY.

That changed the size of the cursor, but it still won't let me type anything!?
