Excel won't let me do anything

I used in a day ago, but now it wont work. I can open excel, or open or
close a file, but I can't do anything to it or the blank file. I can move
the cursor around, highlight things, use the scroll bar, and I think it will
let me print.
I can't do anything else, can't type into any field can't open a new blank
document, can't save, can't insert anything. All the buttons are there, but
they're gray, and when I click on them, nothing happens (buttons like: save,
change font, underline, bold, change color, allign left, center right, undo,
etc.). All the menu buttons are there, and I can open the menus, but nothing
lets me click on it, they're all gray. No error messages or beeps or
anything, I just can't do anything. what's going on?

If you have a trial version of Excel/Office 2003, then maybe the
trial period has ended.

If you have a full version of Excel/Office 2003, then maybe you
have not activated the software. What happens if you start Excel
and click on Help | Activate Product?

I'm not sure of your question but do you know I have an excel document that I
need to highlight each cell a different color and for the life of me can't
remember how?
