Curser position sometimes disregards headr

Sometimes the cursor position on a blank Word 2003 document comes up at
the top of a page and disregards the header placing on screen I correct
this by clicking 'headers and footers' and cancelling. This cures the
problem temporarily but it comes back about twice a week. How do I sort
it permanently?

It will be if you have already corrected the condition, but it won't be when
you encounter it again.

Did not need any correction. Box was already ticked when I checked as
per your suggestion.

Are you suggesting it changes itself?

I am suggesting that if you do not see the header and footer when you open a
document, then if you go to Tools | Options | View immediately, you will see
that the box is not checked. If, however, you have already used View |
Header and Footer to make them display, then the box will be checked when
you go and look. As detailed in my article, the view state is toggled by
clicking on the area between pages. See also "WD2002: Rules for 'Hide white
space between pages'" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297564
