The instructions say that this fix is for Win 9x/Me.
How do you make this work for Win XP?
I have NO hosts file in C:\windows.

No, with all NT-Versions you'll find your "hosts" file in something
like
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
****************************************

But just a warning: if you don't know where to find it, you'd better not
change it....

I have NO hosts file in C:\windows.

Read it again:

"Your hosts file in windows 9x/me is in your windows folder with no
extension.
In XP/2k its in windows\system32\drivers\etc with no extension."

This has worked well for me, and apparently for others as well:

If you have a problem editing the Host file you may want to try this
program:

Host Administrator - Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP) is a freeware 32-bit
program that can administrate the TCP/IP hosts file for your local
network.

The hosts file in your Windows directory is used for the translation of
computer names into IP numbers. With Host Administrator, you can edit
this file very easily.

My XP system worked fine. The hosts file was in
\windows\system32\drivers\etc

This cured the occasional update failure in my XP setup.
AVG 7 has been much slower than AVG6 to update. AVG 7
frequently would time out without updating. My WinXP SP2
would not allow editing the host file with notepad but, I
called up PSPad which is a pretty decent freeware editor.
30 secs later...... problem solved.

Spaced Madness dropped by to express a concern of his regarding pigs in
a dogfood factory? I thought this NG was for discussing freeware . . .

Oh yeah, really - like "*for* *sure*" -- Like *you've* *never* taken a
half dozen cans of different flavored Alpo, and spread the contents on
Triscuits and soda-crackers, and then put a sliced olive on top of each
and served them up at your church's Pot Luck Wednesday Fellowship just to
watch everybody compliment the Pastor for his excellent fruit-punch!

Sheltered lives are to be pitied. And with that pity, comes retribution.

There's no need to add anything to anything, is there? Haven't AVG now
modified their server so that there are no longer any problems with
updates? U still having problems then?
