Cumulative Pricelessware List

S

Susan Bugher

I've added year 2000 programs. I think the cumulative list is now
complete back to day one. . .

Being a relative newcomer - I had to dig back through the archives. . .

It looks like the first "Pricelessware" list was circa early 2000
(before that there was "The Big List").

I used the programs shown on a Pricelessware web page archived by the
Wayback Machine on 2000-03-03 as the year 2000 list. The revised
cumulative PL page is here:

http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/CumulativePL.htm

Wow, there is so much useful information on the Pricelessware site now. It
is a credit to all your hard work. Thanks Susan, it is much appreciated.

You're very welcome bambam. :) It's info that people in the newsgroup
have posted to ACF. . . I'm just working on making it easier to find.

and speaking of easier to find. . .

A new filter might help us find archived posts of special interest. I'm
thinking of [VP] (for valuable post). . . added either by the original
poster or by a responder. Recent examples: downloading Lindows, adding
AVG servers for updates - IMO it would be useful to label such posts to
make them *easy* to find. Looking for a recent [VP] would be especially
easy - just Google for [VP] with the results sorted by date - pick the
one you need. . .

Does anyone else think this would be helpful?

I *very* much appreciate your confirmation on the history - the wording

20) Best Freeware Site : Son Of Spy/Freewarehome ;)

despite the flattery. . .

I'm *not* going to add "Best Freeware Site" to the Cumulative PL. ;)

Introducing a new convention like that VP could be somewhat difficult.

Another alternative is to copy all valuable articles on a web site.
That could lead to copyright problems, people getting angry because
"their" articles are copied without their consent.

A better alternative could be to put links to the articles (on
groups.google) on a web page, together with a short description.
The result, links to acf faqs and articles on a web page, sounds natural
too me.

Copying the best articles to another mailing list or newsgroup, is
another idea. (Copyright considerations here too.)

Your suggestions involve one person doing a lot of work. Filters do not
have this drawback. The primary advantage of a filter is it's *easy* to
implement. The filters we have now don't always get added to posts -
but enough people add them to make them useful.

I save a lot of posts because it's easier than trying to search the
archives and find them - I believe many other people do the same. IMO
adding [VP] to valuable posts would cut down on the need for this. . .

from Dec 27th 1999...

I compared that list to the list from the 2000-03-03 web pages. These
apps from your list are not on the web page:

CADSTD
Euphoria
LCC-Win32
PVDS
Startup CPL
EASYZIP2000
WinLinux 2000
Yabasic
WOCAR

Should the above be noted as PW2000 or can they be considered non-starters?

The web page I used to recreate the PW2000 list has quite a few more
apps than the list you posted. Do you think it's a reasonable
approximation of the year as a whole (I believe the list was more fluid
then)?

I did not think about that aspect before.
Maybe it could be done as a group effort, if we would use a wiki, for
example.

If I add VP to the reply I write, and 10 others get involved in the same
thread, we will have 6-7 complete quotations and a few partly snipped
versions of the same text.

Ideally the marker should only be attached to the subject line of one
message. That means that people have to learn to use VP, and they have to
learn to remove it from the subject line in following replies.

I think this would work, I just think about the possible problems we may
run into. I am for the VP marker, let's try it.

I save only a few messages which are directly applicable, and they are
stored away in their respective area of usage.

AD-AWARE
BABYLON
BLOWFISH ADVANCED CS
DLEXPERT
PAF
WOCAR

improvement *and* would require very little effort?

Maybe that's not terribly important, Google search results usually show
threads, not individual posts. . .

OTOH - if a summary of an interesting discussion is posted at the end of
a thread - that could be the *one* post that's labeled [VP]. . .
I think this would work, I just think about the possible problems we may
run into. I am for the VP marker, let's try it.

That might be the best way, try it on some posts and see what works -
what the problems are.

Pricelessware is a wonderful resource. Thanks for your service to the

Are Start-up Monitor and Startup Monitor the same program?

24) Best anti-virus: INOCULATEIT PE

I seem to recall that InoculateIT PE isn't being updated any more.
Wouldn't it be better to replace this with a freeware version of some other
anti-virus program? (I use Avast!)

I still haven't tried Avast. I used AVG for a long time and switched
to AntiVir PE. I'm very impressed as to how often the engine and
definition files are updated and the ease with which they can be
downloaded.

I like it enough to nominate it when the time does come.

I will admit there is one small thing about Avast! I don't care for. It's
the voice which announces, "Virus database has been updated . . ."

Why? There's no way to turn it off, that's why.
(I once heard it at 4 am . . . .)

There is always a way. I don't use it, so I can't say with
specificity, but there is usually something like a .wav file
that can be re-named, or deleted.
