CTL/ALT/DEL display

D

Darrell Marklinger

I must have changed something? When I press CTL/ALT/DEL to see what tasks are
running once XP is 'up', I get a blank display, asking me to browse to
something? It used to show all the started tasks/processes? What have I done
to cause this, and, more importantly, how do I get it back!!??
Thanks!

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC do the same thing?

On my XP SP3 machine both keystroke combinations bring up the Task
Manager. Use the tabs at the top to switch between applications and
processes and other choices.

meerkat was suggesting that you download and save the reg file from
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/TaskManager_Reset.reg and then run it.
That may or may not help.

Try getting to the experts-exchange thread from the first link in this
Google search. It worked for me (and it shows an alternate fix for your
problem: make sure that "Terminal Services" is running - Start > Run >
services.msc)

For what it's worth (and I make no guarantees; I haven't tried either of
these suggestions):

Suggestion 1
The contents of regedit file that was suggested is between the *******

**************
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\TaskManager]

***************

What that does is delete that key, which you can do manually. If you
want to try this, I *strongly* suggest exporting the key first so that
you can restore it if things get worse. The values in my registry are
*long* strings of hex digits.

Suggestion 2
The second solution is to use services.msc from Start > Run and make
sure that the service named "Terminal Services" is Started. The
"startup type" should be "Manual."

suggestion 1 looks scary..I'll hold off on that one!
suggestion 2: the terminal services is now started MANUALLY {it was on
automatic}. Same result though, sorry.
I think you're on the right track though: I recall going to services.msc on
the RUN command and changing something 3-4 wks back, but I don't recall what
service it was! That's what prob wrecked the ctl/alt/del
display. ??

What specific OS is this?

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

Picture at the top will tell you the specific flavor of Windows you are
running (examples: XP Home, Professional, Media Center; Vista Home Premium,
Business, Ultimate, etc.) Underneath that should be a line starting with
the word "Version" - just repeat that line here verbatim.

The following *may* be a bit overkill - but reading through the entire
conversation so far - unlikely...

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...6F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

If it seemed to have failed, do this:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error
code(s) or explanation as to why the page cannot be displayed.

You can copy/paste the last 50 or so lines here...

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

I think we need to make sure you have a fully patched system and that the
system that handles that is working as well that you are relatively clean of
Spyware/Adware.

What specific OS is this?

WINDOWS HOME EDITION 5.1 with BUILD 2600 etc...SP3 is installed.

I run this about once/month myself...did so, found nothing on a 'quick scan'.
This one is new to me...ran the trail version, quick scan mode, and it found
6 malware files and quarantined 2 of them. Wants a reboot after...will do so.

OK..now on to the next steps.
Thanks for the information, by the way...much appreciated!

WINDOWS HOME EDITION version 5.1 BUILD 2600...etc. with SP3 and I have all
the necessary/current system patches/fixes/etc.
I run this about once/month, so ran a quick scan..nothing found.
Ran this for the 1st time, a trail version, and it found 6 malwarte files
and quarantined 2 of them. Removed them all and rebooted.
Doing this now...then will try the rest of the RUN commands below.
Thanks/appreciate the help!

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

No..the above didn't work. I still have an incorrect display when I use
CTL/ALT/DEL to see the running tasks.
I did try a Windows update scan, but there was nothing there that I need to
update. 5 updates in total: I'm avoidng running Silverlight and an Outlook
Junk mail filter, and a 3rd update was for Windows Search. A 4th was for my
monitor's software, and a 5th, for Office LIVE, which I do not want installed
either.
So NOTHING was installed, thus no reboot.

If it seemed to have failed, do this:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error

Done, and here's the log:
