i want to network my laptop and my home PC, i want to link them together so i
can do basic networking like file and print sharing along with sharing the
broadband connection.

what cable must i have?

i have read that i should be using a crossover, would it be ok though to use
a patch cable? as this is what i have been using. however i have had
problems, i couldnt share the net connection, but could share between
computers, then vice versa.

can any one please help. much appreciated if you can!

For connecting two computers, you will need a cross-over cable.

Some hubs / switches contain auto sensing circuitry, but network adapters don't.
You can use two patch cables with a hub or switch, or a single cross-over cable
to take the place of the hub.

If you have problems, you should check the cable itself, and the two network
adapters. And then the software setup of the two computers. Post here with
more details, and we'll try to help you.

If you have been able to browse other computers via this cable then the cable
is fine. Many modern network cards and routers are inteligent enough to
switch connections internally so that either type of cable will work.

When you say you had problems with ICS and then visa versa, do you mean that
now you can use ICS are but no longer able to broswe other computers on the
network?

My experience with ICS is that it either works easily or is a real pain to
sort out.
Sometimes if it is not working properly it is best to uninstall it and then
attempt to set it up again by the wizard

If the patch cable is of the 'crossover' variety, then use it.. they are
cheap enough to get made up..
