can anyone assist? I am trying to connect two computers together using a
crossover connector cable. I don't have a router, is it possible to create a
shared network (without internet access) for the two computers using the
cable in each of their eithernet ports?

Yes, of course. You'll need to configure the firewalls to allow
file/printer sharing and assign each machine a static IP address such as
192.168.1.12 and 192.168.1.13. For ease of sharing, create identical
user accounts and passwords on both computers. If you wish a machine to
boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for
convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for
both XP and Vista:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
