can not remote login

Any ideas what might cause this?
1. two computers connected together with an eithernet crossover cable, no
router or internet.
2. computer 1 want to set up as a client has xp service pack 3, computer 2
want to set up as a server has service pack 2.
3. remote deskop connection fails from either computer with (computer not
found error).
4. Trying to ping from either computer fails, no response, times out. You
can go to my network places and see folders on the other machine, also the
connection health is good.
Turned off the firewall but this did not help.
Thanks.

Did you remember to use crossover cable and assign static IPs in the same
subnet to both machines?

Is that the Windows firewall? There should be no need to turn it off.

You need to be sure that in the firewall configuration Advanced, ICMP
Settings you are allowing echo requests, or you will get no response
to a ping, so get that working first.

Remote Desktop requires a few other adjustments, but you need to get
ping working first.

Here is the MS article to walk you through it setting up RD:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsXp/using/mobility/getstarted/Remoteintro.mspx

....and you need to be using XP Pro. Remote Desktop is not a feature
in XP Home, but there are alternatives.
