Cross Reference Style

Hi I just want to ask, whenever I insert a cross reference, why it does not
stick to the style being used previously?

Initially I created my references as a numbered list in the form:
[1] Ref 1
[2] Ref 2
[3] ...

When I added a cross reference to the document, for example "[1]" was
inserted by Word.

Now (when I have come back to edit the document) I add a cross reference,
the square brackets are not included and I just get a number. This new
behaviour is very frustrating. How can I change it back?

Found the problem, I need to set "Insert Reference To" to "Paragraph Number".

How obvious was that!!? Not very.
