critical update 821557 problem

backup

Hi
I installed update 821557. the right click facility locks windows explorer
completely. I logged off using the task manager, logged back on and used
system restore to before the update , and it works perfectly. I've repeated
this exercise with the same result every time. Any suggestions? Is anyone
else suffering from the same problem?

Don't install it, a fix is on the way, according to MS.

I am having the same problem but only system restore did
not fix the problem.. I can be looking at a web page and
when i am finished with internet explorer it will not
close the window by pressing on the exit button or right
clicking on the bottom bar. I always have to end it
using the task manager too. It's became a pain in the
button to always have to do that. Does anyone know when
it will be fixed because it is annoying anymore.

Thanks

Tonya

problems after. Reading all the bad things about it, I
went to uninstall it in the add/remove program. Now I am
beeing warned, if I remove this update, Outlook Express
and windows Messenger will no longer work. So, I cancelled
the un-install and wait for a fix from Microsoft.

If you have no problem, do not panic. Just some systems have problems with it. And those are on shortcuts to CD/DVD devices or printer folders. Again, if no problem, stay put with it.

If it does become necessary to remove it, you know where to do it---- ignore the dire messages.
BTW, I have this patch on 2 different XP systems & NO ill effects.

There is no mention of time-frame for a new 821557. Only "soon" is what I heard.

Tonya, are you sure your I.E. problems are due to this update? How did you conclude that?

As long as IE browser windows is in "focus" ---eg, the active window --- pressing ALT+F4 should close it. (as would normally any active window or program).

After you un-install it, how do you re-install it. Are the downloaded
filers kept somewhere?

You have to download it again, unless you saved the original download. As far as I know the updated hot fix is not available yet.
