Creating VPN through D-Link DI-604 router to W2K PC

I just installed a D-Link DI-604 router. Works fine. But I
would like to access a PC (Win2K Pro) on my LAN from
outside with my WinXP Home laptop. I configured the router
as instructed and put my PC (192.168.0.100) in the DMZ.
But I still cannot access my W2K Pro PC. I have set up the
incoming connections properly on my W2K PC as I have
tested the connection internally. Is what I am trying to
do even possible, or do I need an actual VPN product like
CheckPoint?

Take your PC out of the DMZ--bad for security. Use the port forwarding
feature on your router to forward either port 1701 (L2TP) or 1723 (PPTP) to
the internal IP of your XP Home PC.

Thanks, Rob. The DMZ option wasn't giving me a warm fuzzy
either. But your reply put me on the right track. I was
trying to use port 1723 (PPTP). But the Windows built-in
VPN service uses 1701 (L2TP), which I had not tried before
your suggestion. It works now. Thanks!
