creating icons for short cuts

I would like to put real icons instead of manill file folders for the program
shortcuts I put on my desktop. I am a techno idiot so is there a download or
software or something I'm missing?
 
You can right click on a shortcut, select change icon and pick from the MS
icons available. This is only one solution , but it is the easiest.
