Creating a new partition

N

Neil Payne

Hi,

I am trying to create a new partition on my Windows 2000 Server laptop, has
service pack 4, is a domain controller with DFS and Active Directory
configured.

I need to create a new partition for RIS install, and need about a 3 gig
partition for it.

According to the help file you just go in to disk management snap-in right
click anywhere on the free space and click create new partition, hmm!!

This is where the problems start (might just be me being thick) when i go
into disk management snap-in i am presented with just the one disk, which i
expected, so i right click on the disk and get some options, but none
include the creation of a new partition, the disk is not set to dynamic
volume, and i am logged on as administrator with full rights.

I have also tried to find a free partition manager utility, huh fat chance
of that having searched the net, i don't want to buy one as i am only
creating a one off partition.

Does Fdisk create NTFS partitions?

Can you guide me or give me a site where i can download a free partition
utility

Thanks

Neil

There probably is no unallocated space on the disk hence the problem.

When you say unallocated space is this different from free space on the
disk? cause there is about 27gig free on the disk

Thanks

What does Disk Management have to say about this "free" space?

Hi Dave,

Disk management shows the following.

In the main disk management window:

Layout = partition
Type = Basic
File system = NTFS
Status = Healthy
Capacity = 27.94GB
Free Space = 22.02GB
Free = 78%

If i right click on the disk image of disk 0 and select properties it shows
unallocated space = 0MB (interesting)

I take it this is the reason i cannot create a new partition is there no
unallocated space to give a new partition?

Thanks.

Yes that's correct. Free space is the unused portion of the formatted
partition.
