crashing every day...help!

T

taurusbeeegot

I've had my computer for about two months now. It came with Windows Vista. I
installed Norton antivirus on it right away. For the past month it's been
crashing almost every other day.

I have no idea what is going on. I asked a Dell tech and they said to run
startup repair, but I'm still having problems.

Thanks!

Then you need to go back to Dell
BTW Dell usually supplies trial AV software, did you uninstall that first?
Is the Norton version you install Vista compatible?

J.J.

I've had this for a year now but Norton after the last update has been
behaving in pretty much the same way, difference is, Vista won't start.
Norton says to uninstall then re install the anti virus software. I am not
enthusiastic about it working. I suspect you will find a lot of conflicts
between Vista and many of your programs. I know I did. The un install
software is available from Norton. Go to troubleshoot and error messages.
Good luck.

i use ZoneAlarm Security Suite (with Antirvirus) and the AntiVirus can be
Enabled or Disabled - but i keep it disabled all the time. i never used
anti-virus for almost ten years now - i only use Zone ALarm firewal with
anti-spyware enabled.

using anti-virus can attract more viruses into your PC - i think firewall
is enough - try it http://www.zonealarm.com

Hey there Taurus,

I know everyone is telling you to uninstall Norton, but let's try to get
confirmation that Norton is actually the issue first.

Go to Start>Search> Type in compmgmt.msc
Click on System Tools>Reliability and Performance>Monitoring
Tools>Reliability Monitor
Click on a day that you experienced a crash and look for any red x's or
yellow warning symbols. That will correspond with either an application
failure, hardware failure or somesuch. See what actually failed and post it
in here if you're not sure what it is.

Let me know if this helps!

Best Regards,

Will

Absolutely not! That statement is completely wrong.

No anti-virus program can ever be perfect, and even the best one can't
protect you against the latest virus that appeared in the field just
after the newest virus definitions became available to you and you
installed them. But no anti-virus program--not even the worst one--can
"attract" a virus.

how would you then explain the hugely compromised PC performance
that eventually ends into crash - after antivirus is installed in a PC?

i never experienced any virus while using ZoneAlarm properly
configured - altho some spyware can get into a PC but zone alarm
is awesome to have these spyware quarantined.

compromised PC performance and crashes are always been there
since antivirus software are put into market and these antivirus
mfrs do not have much resolutions to offer during crashes.

the agony of frustrations is what matters when crashes occurs
after one have installed antivirus.

i think there is no need to confirm if antivirus is the issue or not.
judges arrived at their verdict using common sense -

if one uses common sense, pc's compromised performance and crashes
occur after installing antivirus - then if one disable antivirus or
completely remove
antivirus from a PC or do not install antivirus - the problem is gone or no
problem at all with just using awesome firewall like ZoneAlarm --- it is then
safe to say that antivirus can affect or conflict or destroy other
applications theat leads to poor performance and crashes.

i might be wrong saying that antivirus can attract viruses into your PC but
antivirus is the real culprit if poor perforamnce and crashes occurs after
installing one.

taurusbeeegot,

I'm George from Norton. I see Will suggested checking if Norton is
causing your computer to crash. If you are having any trouble with
your Norton AntiVirus, feel free to email me at my personal address at
geohen1[at]gmail[dot]com.

George from Norton should have a (e-mail address removed) e-mail address :)

I have sys being running 24/7 for last 3 years with AV installed, crashed
less than a handful of times, no performance compromises, the sys runs apps
overnight & is heavily used during work hours.
No firewall, properly configured or not, prevents viruses
Crashes are caused by your hw/drivers/apps etc

Your assertions are complete rubbish

Okay, I ran the check and what pops up a lot is that my OS has stopped
working. How do I fix this?

balderdash? DL - i beleived your are a norton man - you are not addressing
the problem. taurus said his pc "crashes almost every other day" after
antivirus was installed. why blame on the other driver when in fact
anti-virus can conflict with other drivers or program?

try to boot the PC with a boot CD (or a boot floppy) - whichever is
applicable.
if the PC wont boot you can either do antivirus cleaning of your PC
(requires good skills). if you are not comfortable with this procedure, bring
your PC to a pc tech shop near your place. this is recommended if you need to
recover some VIP works that you save in your PC.

you can also perform complete recovery of your system following the steps
available from your PC manufacturer ----- or if your system is a custom
build, clean re-install the OS - this means that you need to wipe out the
partition(s) and re-install the OS and all drivers and programs you want
installed.

i suggest you use ZoneAlarm Security Suite where you can have the option to
enable or disable antivirus. the nice feature of this ZoneAlarm is that - if
your antivirus is Enabled and your PC's perfpormance becomes compromised, you
can disable it or scan your PC and easily get rid of the viruses. note that
im not a representative of ZoneAlarm - am just sharing my experience with
this program because i've been using this firewall for almost 8 years now (or
since the birth of ZoneAlarm)
