Crashed 2nd DC. How to remove from AD

Hi,

A DC crashed (RAID Array problem) and is lost. It was the 2nd DC in the
domain. Obviously demoting it isn't an option, my question is.
1. How do I manually remove it from AD so I can reinstall and promote to DC
once again?
2. Are there any articles you can point me at detailing the procedure. I
have searched technet but I cannot find the information I need. I am sure it
is in there but I just haven't been able to pin it down yet, and I need to
get it up and running soon, so any help will be most gratefully received.

Regards,

This is a fairly simple process. You would do what is called a metadata
cleanup. Now, how do you do that?

Please take a look at the following MSKB Article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216498

There are a couple of 'gotchas' that people suffer when doing this. Please
heed the Note in step 5. A lot of people try to bind to the Domain
Controller that they are a few steps away from deleting. This will not
work. You need to bind to the existing Domain Controller.
Bind simply means 'connect to'.

You also want to delete the object from the Sites and Services MMC as well
as remove all references to it in DNS.....

The article also mentions ADSIEdit. This is part of the Support Tools. You
would need to install the Support Tools on your existing Domain Controller.
You can either download them from the microsoft web site or you can use the
Windows Service Pack CS-Media ( located in the Support | Tools folder ).
You want to use the latest version ( SP4 for WIN2000 ). I guess in a pinch
you could use the Support Tools off of the Windows Server CD-Media. Please
note that there were some issues, thought.
