CPU usage at 100%

I've been reading some posts on this, but I didn't see one
specifically addressing my problem. One post suggested identifying
the greatest CPU user and its PID, so here goes.

When I check my email via Outlook or visit the Internet, CPU usage
sometimes goes up to 100% and stays there. At that point, I can't
navigate between programs, send email, open email, etc.

The culprit is svchost.exe, specifically the one with PID of 1000.
(At least this time.) Does this happen to be associated with Windows
Update? The yellow shield icon was showing, so maybe that's it. If
so, I guess the "solution" is to wait until the update finishes.

Thanks for any help, especially any suggestions for pinning this down
further.

Download process explorer from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

This utility gives more information than task manager. Each svchost process
can be a container for several services. It will show you what is running
under each instance of svchost.

This is not uncommon and can result from a host (no pun intended) of things.

I'd be ensuring you have a good up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware
program running. I use AVG and Spyware Doctor which I have found to be
better than most.

Some of more virulent viruses activate when you make a network connection -
whether on LAN or via a modem dial-up. They often result in this symptom.

Have a read of this article http://ask-leo.
