CPU show 90% usage

Just purchased a new Pentium 4 over 3 GHz. Installed Office and Norton
Antivirus. Using Earthlink Total Access DSL. Surfing the net computer
frequently freezes up or stops responding. System bogs down and shows near
capacity cpu usage. I'm not even running any other applications. Who
should I contact or what should I do to fix this problem?

There are aprox. 35 processes running. The problem is that I don't know
which ones are needed and which ones are not. I have XP Home, Norton
Antivirus, Total Access for my Earthlink DSL. I have not done anything
else. Like I say this is a brand new computer-less than a week-so I have not
done much with it yet except surf the net. I have not fiddled with it at
all. Whatever processes are running came that way out of the box. Thanks in
advance for any help.

Here are two site that will help you deside what is needed and what isn't.

Since you say this is a new system Have you turned on the XP firewall? or
installed another one? Many worms can infect your system as soon as you
connect to the internet, you don't have to download or click on anything.
Do you have a current anti- virus program?
Here is a link for several online virus scanners.

You can get a free firewall here.

Good Luck.
