CPU running 100%

Mike

I have a new Dell with the factory Windows XP loaded.
I noticed the computer is running slow so I opened the
task manager and found the CPU is running at 100%.
I turned off all startup programs and stopped events in
the task manager one by one in hopes of finding what is
using all of the CPU time. An event called SVCHOST.exe is
using about 70% of the CPU all the time. When I turn off
this event an error pops up and says "you have stopped a
remote preocedure call, the system is shutting down."

How can I find out what this svchost.exe event is trying
to run?

Excessive CPU use by svchost.exe is indicative of an
infection of some type. Update your anti-virus program
and run it. Do this weekly. If you don't have one
installed then on-line check-ups can be found at the
following sites (there are others available - check via
Google). It's better to have an anti-virus program on
your computer so you can use its auto-protect feature.

Have you installed all the applicable Microsoft updates?

Have you checked for spyware/trojans?

Search in Google for SpyBot and Ad-Aware - update and run
daily.

XP has a firewall - if you're not already behind one then
you should enable it. Run your Help and Support Centre
and search 'Firewall'.

To view the list of services that are running in Svchost:
Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.
Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.

I (had) have the same problem. I ran msconfig and turned
off all the services (at startup) - problem stopped. I
turned them back on a few at a time and I noticed when I
turn on the print spooler the problem starts again. So
until I figure out why I leave it off and turn it back on
when I need to print (which requires a reboot) and slowly
print my document.

If anyone knows how to fix this please post. My virus
scan says I have no viruses and I installed the service
packs and hotfixes for Win XP.
