CPU Problems slowing computer down.

In each case you need to check whether the Error or Warning has occurred
before?
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 23/08/2007
Time: 13:26:45
User: N/A

Description:
Faulting application utorrent.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x000111de.

Can you search your hard drive for copies of utorrent.exe using Windows
Explorer. The version number in the report could indicate malware.

I am not sure whether you are seeing all files and folders. Go to Start,
Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and verify that
the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide
protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to scroll
down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box
before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. Next in
Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Are you using utorrent? Some ISP operate a broadband Fair Usages policy.
At peak times they can place restrictions on users who use this type of
programme.

That's the only one in Application...

That is an indication that something is trying to phone home and
failing. It could be malware or a misconfigured programme or service.
What is happening before may provide a clue.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Do you or have had Nero 7? What is it's current status?
And that's all the ones that are in System.
I hope I've copied everything you need...

Place the cursor on the Image name, right click and select Properties to
see the available tabs. The remainder of the post was written
specifically for svchost.exe so some might be relevant for what you wish
to investigate.

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the svchost
producing the high CPU usage, right click, select Properties,
Services. Note there are the full names and some explanation of what
each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services
are dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies
tab allow it a little time to display the information.

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

It was expanded, but it wasn't showing what was using it, just showed
that it was using so much of the cpu.

Thanks for the link for process explorer. I started it up and then
went to play one of my games so I could see what was eating up all
the CPU, but even with that it still says "System" is using up about
45-50% [snip]

You need to expand that (click on the plus sign so it becomes a minus
sign).

These are your two problems. 512mb memory is hardly enough to run 2
programs at one time these days.... Considering McAfee Suite has installed at
least 7-10 background running processes, it's a wonder your computer can get
out of it's own way. I would reccomend at least another gb of ram, and to
get rid of that garbage called McAfee. Try NOD32...it's by far the best
around. http://eset.com . Good luck!

McAfee be part of the problem. Adding 1 gb could well be totally
unnecessary and possibly a total waste of money.

Not at all true. 512MB is more than enough for most people running
Windows XP. Even 256MB is enough for some people.

How much memory you need for good performance is *not* a
one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have keeps you from using the page file, and that depends on
what apps you run. Most people running a typical range of business
applications find that somewhere around 256-384MB works well, others
need 512MB. Almost anyone will see poor performance with less than
256MB. Some people, particularly those doing things like editing large
photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even more
than 512MB--sometimes much more.

True, McAfee is second only to Norton in hurting performance, but it's
no so bad that it would cause such a problem by itself.

I would reccomend at least another gb of ram,

Way, way, overkill for the enormous majority of XP users.

Gerry I am having the same problems that Ben had plus I have an added twist.
I need to press F4 to resume boot-up. I also have DOCUMENT VIEWER popup,
looking for something. I have a choice of DETAILS on the left or Cancel or
CONTINUE on the right of the box. The ONLY way to get rid of it, is go to
task mgr and end task it.

We need to start by disregarding whatever Ben's problems and solutions
were.

Please describe your problems and when they occur.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Ok the TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of
concurrent TCP connect attempts. Is a security limit imposed by Microsoft,
hard coded into the tcpip.sys file. There are patches available on the
Internet just look for that even id. I see that the normal thing that causes
this is the problem\ any bittorrent client will hit this limit due to closing
and opening new connections when peers come and go. This is slow down
browsing while your running your torrent program, it does get annoying I can
say that. I just patched it myself, make sure you backup any file your
changing just in case;)

Good luck,
-Marc
